World Water Day
World Water Day is celebrated annually on 22nd March to bring attention to the importance of water as well as to encourage individuals on how they can do their part to ‘Make Every Drop Count’. Therefore, our centre carefully curated and designed various activities with a focus on educating children on the ways to utilize water wisely. While developing these activities, our centre also aims to reduce our water consumption through long term efforts and practices.
During the week long celebration, the children engaged in various activities such as:
-
Understanding the importance of water and the different ways we use water during our daily lives
-
Being water detectives in searching for water sources in school and during outdoors
-
Water filtration experiment
-
Water rationing
The water filtration experiment provided children with a better understanding of how clean water is created through different means while highlighting how fortunate we are to have ready access to safe and clean water for daily usage.
During the water rationing activity, the children were challenged to ration their water throughout the day, using a 1.5litre plastic bottle.
After the challenge, the children gained more awareness of the importance of water as well as how much water they have been utilizing throughout the day. They also reflected on the different ways that they can better save water (e.g. using a cup to brush their teeth, turning off the tap).
Through this celebration, the children learnt different ways to conserve water through small steps. In order to extend the children’s learning and to weave these practices into their daily lives, our centre encourages children to pour the leftover water from the water jugs into mini water tanks that they can use to wash their hands.
With this, we hope to teach children on how precious water is and to make every drop count.
