As the “Start Small Dream Big” (SSDB) Project is about “Spreading Love Through Music”, we have planned several activities to be carried out im COMNET @ Teck Ghee (Senior Activity Centre), where our SSDB 2019 launching will be held at.
Prior to the launching of the SSDB Project, the children were tasked to bring plastic bottles which will be used as musical shakers. The teachers provided them with different shape cut-outs on coloured paper such as heart shapes, triangles, and circles. The children were given time to decorate their plastic bottles by pasting the different shape cut-outs on it.
When at school the children practiced for their upcoming performance. They sang two songs titles “You Are My Sunshine” and “彩虹的约定”. Some teachers headed the dance while others used various musical instruments as an accompaniment, one teacher played the keyboard and the other two played guitar and ukulele. It was fun to see that the children were enjoying the rehearsals and were excited to perform for the elderly at COMNET Senior Care.
We started practicing few weeks before the actual day of launching on 18 April 2019. We taught the children the songs first and practiced singing regularly to let the children familiarise themselves with the tune and lyrics. After that, we moved on to teaching the dance steps and actions to the children. Finally, we practiced singing and dancing to the songs numerous times with the musical instruments.
Upon arrival at COMNET @ Teck Ghee (Senior Activity Centre), the children were paired with the elderly in a 2:1 ratio. Each child was given a plastic cup and the teacher poured green bean seeds into their cups. Then, the children and elderly poured the green bean seeds into the plastic bottles together to make their musical shakers. Teachers and parent volunteers assisted in pouring the green bean seeds into their plastic bottles and tried to engage all the children and the elderly.
Finally, the children presented their song and dance performance for the elderly, before launching the SSDB Project together.
It was a very fulfilling and heart-warming SSDB launching experience not just for children and parents but also for our beloved elderly.
