As part of the advocacy “Spread Love through Music”, the children excitedly donned their SSDB hats and went around the neighbourhood to serenade the residents. The children along with the teachers visited the residents at block 415. Firstly, we introduced ourselves and oriented them of our Music project. They were given out flyers which the children prepared and then followed by the singing of the songs “You Are My Sunshine” and “What A Wonderful World”. It was so gratifying to see children’s persistent efforts in their performance and what makes the experience more worthwhile was seeing the vibrant faces of the residents, smiling and happily singing along with the children.
With the participation of the Interns, they made the performance even more flavourful by playing the ukulele as a musical accompaniment while the children and other teachers were singing. After singing for the residents, children collected some recyclable materials from them which they will be using to make an improvised musical instruments when back at the centre.
Children also went to the community club and performed in front of the crowd. Along the way, they met various community helpers like the janitors and builders. It was a great opportunity to thank them for their hardwork in performing their vital roles in the community. Through our simple gesture, we painted big smiles on their faces.
The whole experience was blissful and fulfilling. Making the community the core of our SSDB project carves a more relevant meaning on our endeavours. Expressing our love for music and spreading love through this amazing outlet lightened the day of the people we met as well as imprinted positive and lasting relationships with them. Music ain’t just about songs it’s a magical experience that can transcend a lifetime to people from various walks of life.
