PCF Sparkletots Kindergarten @ Toa Payoh Central- Blk 97 embarked on the Start Small Dream Big 2021 with the theme: Stay Connected Make A Difference. The teachers- together with the children, came up with the idea “Small Hands Can Help Big- Reaching Out to the Cleaners in Our Neighbourhood”. This project aims to recognise the efforts of the cleaners in our community amidst the pandemic by showing respect, care, concern and gratitude towards them.
Soft Launch- DIY Picture Frame
In partnership with the parents, we broadcasted an instructional video on how to make a DIY Picture Frame using a cereal box. This launch supported sustainability that enlightened both parent and child to turn a ‘rubbish’ into something beautiful and useful.
The N1 children were introduced to our project by learning how to keep our environment clean through a story, “Neighbourhood Clean Up” while the N2 children shared different ways to thank the cleaners for keeping our neighbourhood clean and free from diseases. Every morning, the children will also greet Mr. Tan and thank him for his hardwork.
The children were also engaged in making a broom and dustpan from recyclable materials like wrapping paper roll and a box for a role-play activity.
In addition, children were also introduced to the 3R’s: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle through a book entitled “Christopher’s Bicycle” by Charlotte Middleton. Children recognised the importance of helping our cleaners by sorting used materials into various recycling bins in order to protect our planet Earth.
Around July to August, we started collecting donations from parents such as face masks, hand sanitisers and snacks for the ‘Care Kits’. The K1 and K2 children helped to sort it out and even tallied how many items they have collected. They also made a “Thank You” card to include in the ‘Care Kits’.
We have successfully given it out to the cleaners in our community. Seeing how happy and grateful they are, made the children happy too. The children realised that although they are still a kid with a small hand, they can still help and make a big impact. With that, they ended up this project by saying to our community cleaners, “Our Community Sparkles because of YOU! Thank You!”
