My First Skool at Block 208B had our 2023 SSDB event held together in conjunction with Kindness Day and Hari Raya.
Through this project, we hope that both children and families will be able to demonstrate and embody the values of this project that focus on empathy, respect, kindness and compassion through the events and activities which includes learning and sharing, combined work pieces and working on raising funds through a charity drive together.
Our centre first launched the start of SSDB project in early April through discussions and activities with the children sharing more about the initiative and the objectives of the event. We also hope for children to understand the roles we can play in the community through the collaboration.
To kickstart the project, we had a break fast together with families from Nursery 2 - Kindergarten 2 at Al-Islah Mosque to understand more about the practices during Ramadhan/Eid. It was a great learning experience for the children to be experiencing breaking fast in the Mosque.
Themed as ‘Seloka(L)RayaxSSDB2023’ the team collaborated with Al-Islah Mosque to discuss the planning and brain storming of booths, activities and series of performances for the audiences. We had a shared goal; to work collaboratively with children and community partners and families to build a stronger, and kinder Singapore through acts of empathy, respect, ownership and compassion. We also aimed to make a contribution through participating and selling items made by children to raise funds for Blessings in Harmony - an initiative by Al-Islah Mosque to support low income families in Punggol.
Our event was held on the 5th May 2023. It was a successful one with a huge turnout from parents, families and community partners that we collaborated to perform with the children - Ang Mo Kio Family Service Centre (AMKFSC-Punggol) and Al-Islah Mosque. There were different booths to support and enrich the learning and experience of the children, families and community partners. The booths that were prepared for the children were: 1. Sales of Craft and Kuih Booth, 2. Cultural Corner - Photobooth and Traditional Games, 3. Refreshments, 4. Al-Islah’s Craft Station for Children! It was definitely great to see everyone enjoying the performances put up by the children and AMKFSC (Punggol), and interacting with one another.
The spirit of gotong-royong was a humble and heart warming sight, as many guests and parents made additional contributions, purchases from the different booths and singing and dancing to the Hari Raya performances!
