As part of the Start Small Dream Big (SSDB) project, we organized a programme for parents called the ‘Parents Readers Programme’. Parent Readers were allowed to enter the school or classroom and read stories appropriate to our PN and N1 children.
In relation to the theme for our project entitled “Respect and Kindness”, we encouraged them to bring along a book that focuses on the values of respect or kindness. The book could be in English or Mandarin.
We invited parents of Pre-Nursery and Nursery 1 to volunteer and be a part of this programme, which was carried out every Friday in Term 3. They were given time slots based on their availability to come down for the reading session and each session was carried out for ½ hour.
Through this collaboration with the parent volunteers, we wanted to reinforce the inculcation of family values and engagement such as kindness, empathy, compassion, and inclusiveness to the children. In addition to that, we hope to be able to enhance children’s literacy development through reading.
We were truly overwhelmed by the amount of support given by the parents to be part of this project. The children were always looking forward to having their parents come in for the reading session too!
