For this year’s SSDB, the children and teachers from classes Pre-Nursery and Nursery 1 have been focusing on inculcating two important values which are respect and kindness.
Towards the project duration, we aimed for children to display their beginning understanding and show respect and kindness as they explore different contexts such as people in their environment, cultures, and materials.
To begin with, the teachers invited the children to brainstorm about the definitions of respect and kindness based on their understanding.
Here are some of the children’s voices:
Kyler: “Be nice to friend and hug”
Flynn: “Help my friend”
Ariel: “When my friend is crying, I will give them tissue and hug”
Leroy: “Use your listening ear when teacher is talking”
The discussion produced various definitions on the 2 focused values of respect and kindness. The children were able to give examples such as scenarios of when they observe a person carrying out these values. In addition to that, they were curious about what these values mean to others. The children were given the opportunity to explore and interview the people around them such as teachers and aunties in the centre.
The children were excited to embark on their exploration of these values as they partake in this project. The teachers participated by jotting down documentations on the children’s findings on a board in the N1’s classroom. The children pledged to take part in launching this project by painting their handprints as a starting point to commemorate the beginning of SSDB.
