Children were introduced to how planting their own vegetables can help protect the environment. By planting our own vegetables, we reduce the need for large plots of land, energy and resources needed to transport, store and distribute these vegetables before they reach us. It also eliminates the need for plastics and packaging.
Planting our own vegetables also allow us to control what goes into the soil, thus, the air and the environment – this prevented the use of pesticides and their harmful pollution. In our garden, our vegetables are organic. Even the fertilisers are natural from the unwanted eggshells that we crushed and sprinkled in the plots. That way we get to recycle and make food for the plants at the same time!
When the vegetables were ready to be harvested, the children were excited and quickly got down to work. We believe our children enjoyed the process and were proud of their ‘vegetables of labour’. Through this, we hope our children find meaning in caring and appreciating nature around them.
