‘‘Hearts and Minds!’’ said the children and parents after the talk on our school’s Start Small Dream Big (SSDB) Project during the Earth Day celebration in late April this year. We chose a significant day, which was Earth Day to officially launch the donation of used items. This was in line with our SSDB’s Project objective on how a small, thoughtful and kind act could have a bigger impact on the community and the environment. By getting the children to participate in the act of donating items, we want to inculcate in the children, the act of sharing and giving, out of love and care for everyone and the environment. In fact, this is the message that has been passed down from generations and we would love to see our children carrying this flag of kindness and thoughtfulness forward into generations to come.
We collaborated with MINDS Organisation by donating the items to MINDS Thriftshop. Not only that, during our Global Day of Parents’ Celebration at school on 31st May, we invited them over to our centre to set up a craft making booth in one of our classrooms. Both children and parents donated a small sum to create a craft with beads like keychain and photo frames together. It was indeed a fun family bonding day for all!
To further enhance the children’s learning experience, after celebrating National Day on 8th August, we brought the children and parents over to MINDS Thriftshop for a memorable and authentic Thriftshop experience. Here, they could see the significance of their small kind act of giving and sharing bloomed into a bigger act of kindness. The parents and children were happy to buy some second hand items at the Thriftshop and mentioned that they would love to visit and donate more items in future.
It was indeed a wonderful and fulfilling journey for the children and everyone involved in this project. To quote from a page in one of the children’s SSDB Journal, “I may be small but my heart is BIG!” And that was enough to know that the spirit of love, giving and sharing is alive and kicking for generations to come!
