Our SSDB Food Safety & Supermarket Journey!

Hi! We are from PCF SparkleTots @ Tampines East Blk 262. Here is our SSDB journey. Enjoy reading!

At the start of our SSDB project, we participated in the SSDB launch party and was able to get to know more about this year’s theme. At the same time, we also introduced the community partner that we will be partnering with - Singapore Food Agency (SFA).

Singapore Food Agency (SFA) also offered guide for Teachers to conduct a “Supermarket Food Safety Learning Journey”. However due to the current pandemic, we were not able to explore the Supermarket. Therefore, we conducted a virtual learning journey to the supermarket!

The children were able to see the different food and items in the supermarket and even shared some prior experiences that they had.

Adding on to that, we also did some craft work that was provided by our community partner. Through the craft work, the children were able to be aware of the “5 Food Safety tips” that was accompanied by the mascot “Oscar the otter”.

After all the discussions and planning with the children, we decided to set-up a Supermarket dramatic play in our class! The children wanted to showcase their Food Safety & Grocery shopping knowledge.

With the help and support from Parents, We started collecting recycled materials like milk cartons/juices, snack boxes, egg cartons and more.

With the help of other Teachers, we also made DIY refrigerator to store any frozen food and dairy products respectively.

This was our main highlight of the Supermarket dramatic play. We also enlightened the children about how delivery options are being used daily and at a higher rate now as compared to before the pandemic. Now, people are staying at home more and they will order their food and other items online.

Therefore, we decided to include the main food delivery companies that the children are fully aware of - Foodpanda & Grabfood.

At least 5 children were able to play at the dramatic centre. The roles were:

  • 2 Delivery riders

  • 1 cashier

  • 2 customer

Then, we planned a Parent-child activity for the children to do at home. They made their very own “Supermarket bag” using old recycled T-shirt. We provided the full information such as the materials needed and video guide for the parents to use for reference. The product of this activity was also a contribution to their Supermarket dramatic centre.

Here are some snippets of the children doing show and tell of their DIY T-shirt supermarket bag.

Here are some snippets of the dramatic centre and some of the children dramatizing the play.

For our last activity, we made a Healthy Sandwich! During the activity, the children were observed following and displaying good food handling such as washing their hands before and after touching the food and rinsing the fruit and vegetables before consuming it.

Our initial plan was to make the healthy sandwiches and distribute it out to the community helpers around our neighbourhood. However, due to the current pandemic, we will not able to go outdoors as a large group.

Therefore, we thought of another way to share our Healthy Sandwich making experience with the community.

The children drew and wrote the ingredients and the instructions to make the Healthy Sandwich.

Afterwards, they will bring home and share the recipe with their family and friends. Some even said that they will try to make it again at home!

As a token of appreciation for completing their healthy sandwich making activity and displaying good food safety handling, the children earned themselves a few goodies from our community partner.

And that is all for our SSDB journey! I hope you enjoy reading about our journey as much as we enjoyed experiencing it all!

Thank you!
