Our Meaningful Trip to St.Lukes Eldercare and Day Rehabilitation Centre

For our preschoolers SSDB project this year, we got them to sit down, discuss and brainstorm with their class teachers what they wish to do. Many contributed but the top choice from the children was to visit St.Luke’s Eldercare & Day Rehab Centre as it ties in together with Grandparents’ Day.

Prior to the visit, children were curious to know more about the eldercare centre and what benefit and help it does to the elders in the community. The teachers used different types of media to inculcate and share with children more about the functions of an eldercare. Not only that, children grew more concern and caring towards the elders around them. Many shared that they will love and care their grandparents, and keep them healthy too!

When they knew that we’ll visit St.Luke’s Eldercare centre, they grew excited and work hand in hand with the teachers to prepare a couple of performances for the elderly. On top of that, they created their own handmade cards to be given out to the elderly in conjunction to Grandparents’ Day.

Our K1 and K2 children danced to the song of Chan Mali Chan while the N2 children dramatised the rhyme “Five Little Monkeys”. They then concluded their performances with a song which they sang happily and lovingly, with actions, to the elders, titled, “You are Special” and ended with a loud wish, HAPPY GRANDPARENTS’ DAY!

After that, children mingled with the elderlies and handed out their handmade cards. Some of the elderlies were touched and teared, and upon seeing this, our children gave them a hug to cheer up these elderlies. The children clearly enjoyed themselves and from here, we can observe their caring characteristics shining bright.

We then proceeded to take a tour around the rehabilitation area where children were able to view what kind of exercises that are appropriate for the elderlies. Later, during the mass workout, our children joined in too, which made the elderlies smiled and motivated to move along with our children! Some were even giving each other Hi-5s and smiling happily too!

When the time was up, children seemed reluctant to return and took some time to bid the elderlies at the daycare centre goodbyes. Some even promised the elderlies that we’ll return for more activities for sure.

Back in the centre, children shared and reflected about their pleasant experience and shared about how they want to show their concern and care towards their own grandparents too!

We’ll done kiddos! The Teachers will definitely plan more trips for you to the eldercare!
