Onto a Green Start!

Environmental consciousness starts from young. K1 children from MOE Kindergarten @ Fernvale Link embarked on a green start through a recycling project for SSDB 2017.

On 23 March 2017, recycling experts from Sembcorp conducted a talk in school to help children understand the abstract concept of recycling. Through the hands-on activities, children learnt to identify recyclables and non-recyclables. The discussions taught them about the importance of recycling and how each of them can contribute to recycling on their own. They also learnt that the recyclable materials are to be washed before placing them into the recycling bin.

Following the talk, teachers and children came together to set up recycling bins in the centre. Through children’s creativity and hard work, these recycling bins were decorated with different recycled materials (as suggested by the children!).

Parents and children contributed by bringing recyclables to school for recycling or their craft works on a regular basis. Through this process, children are able to identify different types of recycled materials (i.e. metal, plastic, fabric and paper) and sort them accordingly.

To reinforce the concept of reusing and recycling, parents were engaged to participate in our very first MK Recycling Fashion Runway. Each child was tasked to work together with their parents to create their individual costumes using recycled materials. On the day of the Fashion Runway, parents were invited as audiences to support the children and their creations. Each costume was unique and exhibited a great deal of creativity! Children were able to observe and experience a real-life application of what they have learnt about recycling thus far.

The end of this SSDB Recycling Project will be marked by creating greater awareness of recycling and giving back to the society. Children are learning to make handmade paper using recycled paper with their peers and teachers in school. A note about recycling will be written on these handmade paper and they will be distributed to people in the community (i.e.: family friends, neighbours, shop keepers). As children distribute the handmade paper, they will be asked to talk about the 3Rs and to take a commemorative photograph. The objective of this activity is to encapsulate children’s learning and contribute to the community.
