‘Plant dreams, pull weeds and grow a happy life!’ - Anonymous In August, the children were exposed to the concept of mulching as part of our monthly gardening collaboration with NParks!
They used dried leaves as mulch for the trees in the park. So this time round for our session in September, children were introduced to organic mulch! Children learnt that organic mulch are made up of organic residues such as grass clippings, shredded bark, whole bark nuggets and woodchips.
Children were amused that what we perceive as waste and dirt were actually nutrients for the trees and plants! So they all beamed with excitement, as they put on their SSDB bucket hats and gloves to get to work!
They learnt the right process and method of placing the mulch around the plants. Children learnt that plants, just like humans require tender loving care and vitamins to grow well!
And of course, after mulching the children took out their spades and started weeding without even being told! After 5 months of working in the garden, the children take pride in the gardening plots and consider them as their own! They have grown to develop responsibility towards the garden and are able to remember to put into practice what they have been learning! Great job children from Nursery, K1 and K2!
