Music in a Story

At the launch of Start Small Dream Big, parents get to find out more about the project. Parents are excited that SSDB opens the window for preschoolers to give back to the communities in their own little ways!

NO ONE CAN DO EVERYTHING BUT EVERYONE CAN DO SOMETHING!

The tagline highlights to children that they do not need to wait for “one day when they’re grown up” to be able to give back to the communities.

Teachers work with children to enhance musical experiences inspiring children to appreciate music. The focus is to accentuate the characters, actions or to heighten the mood or emotions of the story with music.

Children listen to a short story and talk about how they would interpret some elements of the story. They experiment with their voice, high, low, drone, hums etc and explore musical instruments to represent the different characters in the story for example walking rhythm on the woodblock for Red Riding Hood, stomping sound on the drum for the wolf, hopping rhythm on a double tone block for a bunny etc. The teacher read the story again adding the sound effects that the children suggested.

Children work together to be creative with music-making to conjure up their imagination and inventive skills to create their “story” with music.

Finale of SSDB

Parents are invited to the children’s performance which is a fund raising activity. The proceeds are for MY Manna which is a programme managed by the Community Service Department of Metropolitan YMCA. MY Manna is a food ration programme for the poor, needy and disadvantage families in our Society. The beneficiaries are referred by the Government and Social Services Agencies.
