Our class has always wanted to get a class pet but we did not know what was best to get. We should get one that a 5-year old kid could actually take care of. And guess what? By the beginning of Term 3, we did get a class pet!
Our teacher bought us our own guppies!
Do you know what guppies are?
Well, we didn’t really know what they were at first but we found out that were also called “rainbow fish”. There are so many of them around the world (maybe that’s why they are called “millionfish” too). They are tiny, colourful fish that live in either tropical or fresh waters around the world.
When we first saw our guppies, we were so excited! They were so colourful! And there were so many of them! We had 10 of them in the fish tank!
Do you know a secret that we learned about guppies? You see those colourful ones? They’re the male guppies! Who would’ve thought boys could be more colourful that girls? Haha!
We learned about the importance of taking good care of our class pet. We learned that we should not overfeed the fish because that is not good for them. We learned that the water in the tank should be changed at least once every 3-4 days. We took turns in feeding the guppies every morning before we started our lessons. We all looked forward to getting our turn in feeding them.
But here’s what made us more excited! We got to take turns in bringing home the guppies over the weekend. Do you know why? It’s because our teacher said the guppies will be sad if they are left all alone in school over the weekend.
It was a huge responsibility but we all stepped up to the challenge because we love our guppies. Our mummies and daddies even helped us take care of our guppies.
It was fun to share this experience with our teacher, friends and family too!
