Caring for the Pioneer Generation

M.Y World @ Bukit Batok West Quarry recently embarked on a meaningful project titled “Caring for the Pioneer Generation,” in collaboration with Bukit Batok Care Home (BBCH). This initiative is particularly significant, as BBCH is a familiar neighbourhood spot for our children and teachers, who often greet the elderly during their neighbourhood walks.

The project began when our teachers observed the children’s keen interest in dialects. We introduced the children to various dialects, including Hokkien and Cantonese, sparking an inquiry process that encouraged exploration and discovery. Through discussions, the children shared their experiences of hearing these dialects spoken by their grandparents at home or in coffee shops, realizing that the spoken language sounded different from what they had learned in school.

Recognizing this as an opportunity to bridge the gap between generations, our team of teachers reached out to BBCH. The children prepared heartfelt greetings, songs, and crafts that celebrate both dialects, aiming to create relatable experiences for the elderly and foster connections.

During the showcase, the children exhibited remarkable confidence, thanks to their practice in school. The elderly welcomed them with warm smiles, creating heartwarming interactions as they responded in their dialect. This project not only strengthened bonds between the young and the elderly but also enriched the children’s understanding of their cultural heritage.
