This is the first year Learning Vision @ Work Pte Ltd - Sengkang General Hospital embarked on a SSDB project. Aligned to the topic “Zero Waste” introduced during lessons of Global Citizen – Environmental news in Term 4, the project engaged Kindergarten 1 and 2 children through a learning journey ‘Road to Zero Waste!’ During discussions, ‘Recycling’ was identified as one of the ways integral towards developing a Zero Waste Nation.
To start off the project, the children collaborated to create recycling bins for the school. These recycling bins (i.e. plastic, paper, metal and glass) were then placed at the entrance of the school for children to sort recyclables. Integrating parental involvement, children and their families also played a part to collect recyclables from home and bring them to school.
Through this project, children gained an understanding on the need to show care and respect for the environment, as well as an awareness on recycling correctly by knowing what items can or cannot be recycled.
Next, children were engaged in a weekly Outdoor Learning Experience (OLE) for two consecutive weeks. They headed out to recycle the items collected from home and school into the larger recycling bins provided within the hospital premises. To continue to promote sustainability of the project, the OLE was further extended for one more month on a bi-weekly basis for each class level.
The OLE provided children with a hands-on learning experience and platform to apply their knowledge in real life. It was heartening that the children showed eagerness to play a part in contributing to the community through their actions to “Be the change you want to see…
