Love your pets

After the last session about abandoned pets, the K1 and K2 children became more empathetic towards the topic and showed interest in learning more about them.

The teachers conducted a session revolving around the topic, “A Pet is for Life” and taught the children not to get a pet on impulse, but to be a responsible and considerate pet owner and not to abandon pets.

The children were drawn to the attention on how animals have feelings too and are helpless when we do not treat them kindly. The children discussed ways in which animals should be handled and cared for. They concluded that animals should be treated with respect.

They were introduced to 3 soft pet toys named Larry the dog, Rex the dog and Sandy the tortoise.

Children explored 3 pets and learned various ways in which different animals can be cared for.

Among 3, most of the children loved Rex and wanted to take care of him. As we wanted to emphasize on the importance of caring for pets, the teachers along with the children came up with a schedule to care for the pets. However, the children were more eager to care for these pets at home, thus a consent form was sent out to the parents to seek their support in sending back the soft toy pet of their child’s choice to care for at home. After receiving the consent from the parents the children were scheduled to take turns in bringing home the pet of their choice to be looked after for 2 days. Along with that, its preferred food and “Needs of Animal” activity sheet was given.

After the whole process of caring for the pets at home was completed, a sharing session was conducted. At the sharing session, children were encouraged to give their feedback the challenges they faced during the two days while taking care of the pet. They shared their experiences with others and gained a sense of appreciation and love towards animals around them.

Some activities were conducted in the individual classes. The vocabulary related to pet care was introduced to N2 class and children took turns to come forward and explain the picture card they chose.

Later, they matched the picture card with the corresponding word.

K1 class children were given the activity sheets to reflecting on thir experiences and share it in the form of drawings.

To conclude the project, K1 and K2 children were given t-shirt template to design based on their understanding and learning for the topic “A Pet is for Life”. They actively contributed their ideas and two of the designs were chosen.

The two designs were then selected and merged to come out with the final design for the t-shirt.

This t-shirt is now ready and we will be selling it to raise the fund for our beneficiary “Causes for Animals”.
