MK@Wellington kick-started our very first SSDB project with the theme, “Love and Care” for the Elderly.
At MK@Wellington our teachers shared on showing love and care towards elderly and spending quality time with our elders at home. Teachers encouraged the children to think of ways to show their love and care for the elderly. Children suggested various ideas such as giving goodie bags, playing games and making a special card for the elderly. We contacted Singapore Christian Home and proposed our children’s initiatives.
Our centre collaborated with parents by encouraging them to donate food items such as milo packets/coffee packets and soft cakes. Our parents generously donated more than what we asked for. We appreciate their contributions to this project. The children helped to pack the donated items into plastic bags.
On 30th August 2019, 37 K1 children together with a team of teachers and parent volunteers visited Singapore Christian Home at. Sembawang. Upon arrival, the children performed four local songs in different languages that depicted the multi-racial community in Singapore to the elderly.
After the performances, the children together with the elderly created an art and craft activity. They collaged various textured materials and created a flowerpot. They also wrote some well wishes for them. Through this activity, there were plenty of interactions between the children and the elderly. The bond between them just got stronger as they participated in more activities. It was indeed a lovely sight!
Following that, children and the elderly played passing the ball game. They passed the ball around and when the music stopped our children did the forfeit by performing chicken dance. Elderly encouraged the children by clapping their hands and singing along. Indeed they were having a great time!
Before we bid farewell to the elderly, the children gave each elderly a goodie bag that consisted of the donated items. The children expressed their love and care by saying ‘I love you and I care for you’.
It had been a meaningful experience for the children, teachers as well as parent volunteers. The children’s presence had brought a smile to the faces of the elderly. By this project we hope to instil the spirit of giving and values like respect, care, kindness and humility together with perseverance and appreciation. We thank Singapore Christian Home for giving us this opportunity to ‘Love and Care’.
