For this year’s SSDB, children at our centre showed great interest in caring for animals. To help children develop a sense of responsibility towards animals, the centre adopted a terrapin as a school pet.
During the launch party, children were introduced to their new ‘friend’, the terrapin.
As a school, we named our new ‘friend’, Toby. Thereafter, teachers led the children in saying a pledge that we will be committed in taking care of Toby.
Teachers shared with children the responsibilites each one of us has to take care of the terrapin. We demonstrated the feeding and cleaning of the tank. Children were also taught the proper handling of the terrapin and the signs of having a healthy terrapin. Children were excited and eager to kick start in caring for Toby.
We told children they will be able to take turns to care for Toby by bringing it home over the weekends. In school, we will rotate the duty of taking care of Toby on a weekly basis by classes.
With that, we commence ’SSDB’ and hope that children will learn to be a responsible pet owner by the end of the project.
