The children and teachers at PCF Sparkletots Preschool @ Kampong Chai Chee Blk 424 celebrated Earth Day and kickstarted our ‘Start Small Dream Big Project’ – ‘Save Energy, Save Earth’ with an SSDB Launch Party on Thursday, 22 April 2021. Our aim is to raise awareness on the importance of energy and its various sources in our environment and the impact it has in our daily lives. As part of the launch, the children participated in activities based on electricity, which is an energy source that is very commonly used around us. The children explored concepts such as static electricity through friction as well as identifying conductors and insulators of electricity through creating a short circuit. The children also showcased their upcycled craft which were made from electrical waste (e-waste) during their ‘Show and Tell’ session.
Prior to our Earth Day celebration cum SSDB Launch Party, we had invited a representative from National Environment Agency (NEA) to conduct a terrarium workshop with the children. The aim of the workshop was to allow the children to recognize that there are many uses to plastic bottles aside from craft and that plants need solar energy in order to survive. They each had to bring a recycled plastic bottle and were shown on how to plant their terrariums as well as instructions on how to care for them. At the end of the workshop, the children’s terrariums were hung around the centre alongside the rest of their Earth Day decorations.
