On 9th July 2021, MOE Kindergarten @ Pei Tong officially launched the Start Small Dream Big (SSDB) Project – “Kindness Starts with Me”. In conjunction with this year’s SSDB theme which is ‘Stay Connected, Make A Difference’, we are introducing to the children the spirit of helping one another and keeping in touch with our seniors. Through this SSDB project, we hope to cultivate in children a sense responsibility towards the community.
To kick-start the project, the children were first introduced to what ‘Start Small Dream Big’ was about. Then, different virtues such as Respect, Compassion, Gratitude, Integrity, and Courage we explicitly taught through social stories and scenarios.
They extended the lesson, to their home by sharing the virtues with their parents by making crafts and playing games to reinforce these values.
After sharing the different virtues, we shared with the children the ‘Kindness Start with Me’ project that they were going to embark on together with the teachers. The children made a pledge to remember the virtues as the move forward with the SSDB project!
Pictures of seniors were shown to the children and we brainstormed ways on how to keep them active and happy. The children brainstormed and decided that exercising would a good way to keep them healthy and fit. They picked the song ‘The Road Ahead’, which was this year’s National Day song for them to exercise to. Together with the teacher, they created a simple and fun exercise for the seniors to follow along.
