The book “Kindness is Power” (the winning story of Singapore Kindness Movement’s Write for Kindness 2022) emphasizes kindness and empathy. It’s an age-appropriate book with a story that features characters who perform acts of kindness, share, and help others. Thus, children could remember vividly that “Kindness is my SUPERPOWER!” after the storytelling.
Additionally, children have been given a Kindness Chart “I CAN BE KIND EVERYDAY” with stickers to do at home to cultivate the culture of kindness. They were encouraged to complete tasks daily for a week and they would be rewarded with a sticker for each task they completed. Kindness charts can help children learn how to be kind. It can be a fun and interactive way to encourage and track acts of kindness. These tasks will help children be kind and generous to their families. The goal of stickers may initially motivate children, but as they accomplish the tasks, they will realize how important it is to be kind and will appreciate the fact that they don’t receive rewards.
Children also created a kindness card for their friend, family member, or caregiver. They wanted to remind the recipient of the importance of kindness and compassion and encourage them to spread kindness.
Teaching children about kindness and empathy through these activities and storytelling is a wonderful way to instill values that will shape their character for years to come.
