“Kindness is a gift that everyone can afford to give”. Through this quote, children comprehended that acts of kindness no matter how small or simple may have a big impact on people around them. Using resources provided by Kindsville, children went on a Kindness journey to learn different ways to be kind.
Children listened to teachers reading a book titled, “Kindness is Power,” by Winning Book of
Singapore Kindness Movement’s Write for Kindness 2022. Through the story, children explored the different acts of kindness, such as giving up the seat to the elderly on the bus, sharing toys or helping a friend in need. Then, children shared and identified their their own Kindness Power. They drew themselves as a superhero with a kindness power and described what their kindness powers are!
Using Kindsville’s Singa and the Kindness Cubbies Rolly Polly resource, children discussed what they know about the different ethnic costumes in Singapore. The activity was done in conjunction with Racial Harmony Day. They coloured and pasted stickers of different ethnic costumes on Singa and the Kindness Cubbies. Through this activity, children understood that kindness is for everyone regardless of race.
Children have learnt a lot about kindness through Kindsville’s Singa and Kindness Cubbies. We invited Kindsville to our school to host their Puppet Show. Through the show, children learnt and recalled ways to be kind to their friends such as being gentle and caring for each other. They thoroughly enjoyed their time and had a good laugh during the whole session. It was a good experience! They even received Singa and Kindness Cubbies finger puppet that they brought home to complete with their parents.
Parents were involved in helping children think of different ways to show kindness. Children brought home a thank you frame, provided by Kindsville, to bring home to complete. They decorated the frame and inserted who they feel thankful towards. These gestures have involved parents to be proactive in their children’s character building as they share with them how thankfulness and gratefulness are part of acts of kindness.
At the end of our kindness journey, children participated in a letter writing activity to express their gratitude to Singa and the Kindness Cubbies. In the letter they shared what they have learnt throughout their journey. It was a good self-reflection for the children. The letter was posted out to Kindsville and children are excited to receive a reply from Singa and the Kindness Cubbies.
Can you see the words KIND? Children used their bodies to make the letters KIND! Through these activities we have seen children showing kindness to one another. It is evident as we teachers hardly ever hear them complaining about their friends who refuse to share with others, or they have highlighted good deeds theit friends have done such as helping to keep the classroom area clean. Overall it has helped instill kindness in our young children and it was a fruitful journey with Kindsville.
