Our batch of N2 and K1 children visited All Saints Home (Jurong) for the first time. We aim to visit the home at least once per month to interact with the elderly and to bring joy to them. At the same time, we want to nurture our little ones to be empathetic, loving and caring towards others.
The children started with an introduction and some dance for ice-breaking. The elderly clapped their hands accordingly and seemed to enjoy the performance.
After their performances, the children were split into pairs with the elderly so that they can interact with them to build a closer relationship.
It is really endearing to see the little ones making efforts to get close to the elderly and wanting to talk to them and make them happy.
We had an art jamming session where the children and the elderly created an art piece together. The children were very eager to help the elderly. They were also seen trying to communicate, first in English then in Mandarin and when all else failed, they used gestures and simple repetitive verbs. Isn’t it cute to see how they are able to adjust and use different forms of communication?
The elderly also made efforts to communicate with our children as well. One elderly spoke in English with the children and the caretaker was taken aback as she had never heard that elderly spoken in English before and had assumed she only knows Mandarin all these while.
It was a really fruitful session for the children and they exclaimed that they looked forward to the next session in September!
