While going on a listening walk around the neighbourhood prior to Earth Day, the children from MOE Kindergarten @ Yishun noticed the recycling bin in the neighbourhood. This sparked off a discussion on the topic of recycling. Hence, the teachers and children decided to embark on some activities to raise awareness of taking care of the environment and what we could do to save it through the 3Rs (reducing, reusing, recycling). Through a series of activities, the children and teachers aimed to make small contributions to the environment . Read on to find out more on what our Yishun Explorers have got up to as part of this project!
Recycling talk
To kick-start the whole project, we invited a speaker from SembCorp to conduct a recycling talk for the children. On 13th April, Mr Leon, from SembCorps visited us to share about the importance of recycling. The children were provided with opportunities to participate in recycling through sorting various items into the recycle bin and general waste bin respectively. They also learnt that recyclable materials (either dirty or soiled) should not be placed in the recycling bins as they may contaminate the recycling facilities.
Clean-up day
The recyling talk sparked the children’s interest to keep the environment clean. Our Lily and Daisy children worked very hard during the Clean-Up exercise on 12 May 2017 to do their part in keeping the environment clean. They walked around Yishun Park to pick up litter and sorted them into bags labelled ‘recyclables’ and ‘non-recyclables’. At the end of the activity, children shared that they felt happy and proud that they had helped to care for the environment.
Recyclable Art for flea market
Our inquisitive learners discovered many facts about recycling and learnt that everyone could do their part to protect our precious Mother Earth through the 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle). After several votes and discussions, the children decided on the artworks that they could do as part of Earth Day. The artworks include pencil holders, calming glittery bottles, photo frames, book marks. This recycling art activity was also carried out during their Mother Tongue lesson where they did an egg shell ornament.
Flea Market
After brainstorming and planning together for months, the children’s learning about the importance of recycling in caring for the environment culminated in an exciting event called ‘It’s an Earth-rific Day!’ On 21st September 2017, children participated in a series of activities encompassing of a recycling-themed cheer competition, animal mobile race (which parents and children had worked together to create) as well as a runway show. The runway show was a chance for parents and children to strut their stuff and show off their creatively and carefully-crafted costumes (made completely out of recycled materials)!
Finally, the highlight of the event was the Flea Market, where parents and children got a chance to visit different class booths, look at all the different recyclable artworks and exchange their coupons for those that have captured their liking.
