Islander Community Library: How It All Started?

The children of the Kindergarten 1 and Nursery 2 class embarked on the Start Small Dream Big project by looking into ‘How can I contribute as a member of the community?’

The children are absolutely in love with stories and have experienced the true joy, wonderment and fascination from the stories that they have read. They have been bringing their beloved books in to school to share with their friends and would be seen exchanging books with their friends every single day. It eventually sparked the idea of creating a book sharing space for everyone in the school.

Child A: We can put our books in the classroom to share with our friends.

Child B: But then my brother won’t be able to read it because he is not in our class.

Child C: Yes, my brother can’t read it too because he is in the same class as your brother.

Child D: We can put the books somewhere so that everybody in the school can read it.

They began to explore the school grounds, looking for a space that would be accessible to everyone and found one - right behind the dining area where children of the different levels have access to.

They immediately set off to work. They made plans for the space, shifted a bookshelf there and created a sign to inform other teachers and children of how they envision this space to be. I wonder how the space would transform.
