We kicked off the June Holidays with an introduction to our SSDB project titled KiddiSprouts. The children were introduced to plants and ways to grow it through stories and activities.
The Nursery children were first invited to engage in a group discussion to share what they know about planting. They were prompted with questions such as, “What can we plant?”, “What do we need for planting?”, “How does a plant grow?” and “Why is it important to have plants around us?”. They were then encouraged to share what they wanted to find out about planting. To sought answers to their line of inquiry, the children were shown a few short educational clips on planting. They were then encouraged to reflect on and share their insights. The children’s responses were documented in the form of a K-W-L chart.
The K2 children listened to the story “A Bean’s Life Cycle” and learnt about the cycle of how a plant begins with a seed and grows into the fruits and vegetables that we have around us. They then created their own plant life cycle chart using paper plates to better understand how our environment works and shared ideas about how we can better protect the nature around us. The children also started writing their thoughts and ideas about their SSDB project in the SSDB journal.
The Pre-Nursery children were introduced to the story of “The Tiny Seed” and it was shown on what a seed or plant need in order to grow. Apart from that, the children did a simple experiment on how plants absorb water and nutrients using celery and coloured water.
The children were not the only ones involved! Miss Joanne Phang from NParks also came down to our centre to share basic planting knowledge with our teachers!
