Recycling can be made fun and interesting if children gain awareness and profound understanding of its core purpose. Creating a sensorial and informative poster will provide them with a kick-start to pursue their recycling initiative. Before children start recycling, it would be great if they acquire ample knowledge of what recycling means, what objects can be recycled, why is it necessary to do so and how does it contribute to the sustainability of the environment.
In this activity, children were taught about the 3Rs and the basics of recycling. We encouraged them to collect recyclable items at home and were tasked to bring those items to school. Children were given the opportunity to showcase the recyclable items they have brought from home through a show and tell session. They were then gathered in small groups and started creating the poster. The first part of the activity was to create an Earth figure using egg crates. Some painted the egg crates with blue and green paints while another child painted the Earth clipart.
Another set of children back in the classroom were engaged in identifying the recyclable items and writing their names accordingly on a piece of paper.
When the egg crates dried up, the children started assembling them to form an Earth figure. They also helped in pasting the letter cut-outs on the black coloured paper. One child was preoccupied in decorating the sides of the poster using bottle caps while the other one was painting and applying glitter on the crepe paper.
After sorting the recyclable objects, the children started transferring those items and stuck it onto the poster. They named the object aloud before sticking it on the paper to ensure that they place it under the correct specification.
Working together to assemble our poster!
The children happily took a pose beside their poster. We hope that this improvised sensorial poster that the children have created will strike a positive impact in them to continue inculcating the value of recycling.
The poster is displayed in the project room along with the recycling bins that the other group of children have created.
Have fun recycling children!
