As the children were introduced to the project’s theme, Care for the Elder, we discussed the different elders that we are surrounded by, such as our grandparents. The children were excited to share their own experiences with their grandparents.
-
My grandma sometimes fetch me from school. - Qayla
-
My grandma don’t live with me but sometimes she come to my house because she lives very near. - Wei Na
-
If my grandpa fetch me, I always go home so early. - Yu Xiang
-
Last time I go to Atok and Nani house and eat chicken rice. - Hazim
Following that, we shared the different ways we can show care and help to the elders. Through pictures, the children identified situations where we can help the elderly and came up with solutions through dramatization.
One of the ways discussed were to hold onto their hands to guide them when walking and help them carry any bags that may be too heavy for them.
Another way would be to provide support when the elderly have to push themselves up from a resting position. Though they may not be strong enough to fully support the weight of an elderly, it is still a kind gesture towards the elders to offer help.
As we have collected a handful of food donations from the children and families for the elderly, we also dramatized how we would gracefully hand these items to them as a gift.
Everyone in the class is so grateful for the generous donations made and are excited for the elderly to receive them. The children have found a stronger appreciation towards elderlies and how they play a part in their life as grandparents.
