Helping Hands with Helping Heart - A World for All Ages by PC Sparkletots Preschool @ Woodgrove 364

Update - In early-May, our children embarked on a food donation drive to gift some essential food items to the seniors of Woodlands Care Home (WCH). Parents and their children showed their support by bringing in the listed essentials such as plain crackers, coffee, milktea and Milo sachets.

While in Mid-May, our K1 children of the morning and afternoon sessions engaged in three virtual sessions with the seniors at Senior Activity Centre @ WCH.

Greeted with beams and smiles, the seniors and our children spent some time to get to know each other through a simple chit-chat session. Children demonstrated their caring hearts and patience as they asked of their well-being and waited for the grandpas and grandmas to respond. Gradually as the sessions went, children develop more confidence in expressing themselves and wanted to spend more time talking to the seniors.

During the chit-chat, children asked questions like ‘how are you?’, ‘have you eaten?’, ‘did you drink lots of water?’ and so on; greeting the seniors and nurses with beaming smiles and giggles.

In the second part of the session, seniors and children played a guessing game. Traditional games (e.g., 5 stones and chapteh) and oldie items (e.g., string chair, old coin telephone and sewing machine) were featured in the game. Both seniors and children showed their excitement and participated actively in the guessing.

In the third part of the session, children took turns to host warm-up stretches and performed to “Clap Clap Dance” for the seniors. The seniors cheered on and tried dancing along in their seats.

In spite of having to do the meet-and-greet online, the smiles of the seniors at WCH and our children’s, still glow brightly through the virtual sessions. The children also managed to see the collaborative cards they have done for the seniors awhile back. And now, they have been completed by the familiar faces and voices of seniors whom they chatted and danced with for the past three days.

On this significant day marks the closure of our SSDB 2023 project. Despite the end of this project, we hope that our children have gain meaningful insights and experiences about intergeneration and continue to live harmoniously in a world with different ages.

We want to take this opportunity to thank everyone – parents and children who have actively participated and contributed in this yearly project and a very special thanks to the seniors and staffs of Woodlands Care Home for welcoming and accommodating us.

You’ve made this wholesome journey a splendid one to be a part of! :-)
