Happiness=Simple Acts of Kindness

Bright Juniors@Jurong West embarked on the President’s Challenge ‘Start Small Dream Big’ Project for all K1 and K2 children as part of their Character Building Journey. We kick-started the SSDB project on 18 April 2017. Children proudly wore their orange bucket hats and mascot stickers to create awareness in the school that they are the ambassadors.

To celebrate the SSDB launch, children decorated cakes by forming the words ‘Start Small Dream Big’ using different food toppings and ate them during snack time. They also did discussions in class about simple acts of kindness and how they can contribute to the community by creating pledge cards.

In conjunction with the Singapore Kindness Movement in the month of May, we organised a visit to St Luke’s Eldercare @ Jurong East on 24 May 2017. We aim to help children be aware that they are never too young to contribute to the community; making conscious effort to spend time with elderly folks who might be lonely is also a great way to bring smiles to everyone.

Prior to the visit, we encourage parents’ involvement through getting parents to work with their children to create handmade flower crafts for the caregivers at the Eldercare as a token of our appreciation for all their hardwork.

During the visit, children performed four simple song and dance items for the elderly. They also did a simple exercise workout as well as a craftwork using recycled materials together.

Children spent a meaningful morning with the elderly and their caregivers. The performance made the elderly smile and they clapped along cheerfully to show their happiness.

Children also participated in the kindsville Tour on 7 June 2017 where they joined Singa on his jourmey to learn the value of kindness. They went through 3 stations where they were taught to make hands-on thank you cards for someone they appreciate, read about a character value and also entered into an experiential tour into Kindsville where Singa and the Kindness Cubbies taught them about the importance of giving up their seats in the bus to those who need it more. They also learnt about the 5 magic words ‘Thank you’, ‘Please’, ‘You’re welcome’, ‘Sorry’ and ‘Excuse me’ as they experience life in Kindsville.

It is hoped that through such intentional efforts, these young ‘masters of our future’ will learn that every little effort towards showing our appreciation for the people around us will go a long way to make our world a kinder, more joyful and compassionate place to live in.

“No one can do everything but everyone can do something”.

It does not matter if we are big or small, the little things we do can make a difference. This project was indeed a very meangingful experience for everyone.
