Our children were curious about the type of food that Pedro eats. The children began the activity by discussing about the habitat of a sea lion and what are the possible food sources in this habitat. Next, the children learned how to create a food web for Pedro using picture cards. With teacher’s facilitation, the children understood about the flow of energy from one organism to another organism. Having understood the concept of a food chain, the children then created their own game token for the food chain board game. The children were giggling and chatting away as they tallied the number of times Pedro was attacked by a predator and the number of times Pedro gained energy from eating.
As the children gain more awareness about Pedro, they are developing more empathy towards marine animals and their habitat. We hope to inspire innovativeness in our children as they attempt to safeguard the future of Pedro and its kind as well as all other marine animals!
