Continuing their quest for finding solutions to climate change, our special agents studied about landfills and learnt how rotten food wastes in landfills produce methane— a greenhouse gas that caused climate change. In their lesson, children raised their awareness of managing wastes through 4Rs- reduce, reuse, repurpose, recycle. Most importantly, they learnt a way to recycle food wastes by making a compost.
children participated in a composting activity by mixing dried leaves, food scraps and soil together in a plastic bottle with holes and sprayed some water on it. They kept their compost for weeks and took turns on spraying water, stirring their compost, and observing the changes that happened with their compost regularly over a period of six weeks. They were amazed to see tiny worms moving on their class compost. Children eventually used the compost as fertilizer for the tree planted.
With these activities, children became aware that fighting climate change doesn’t have to be an expensive or complicated initiative. Supporting the environment can be as simple as reducing wastes, buying only as much as you need, reusing, recycling and repurposing such as food waste into compost. We believe that if we all practise these small steps, we can see our big dream of having an earth free from climate change comes alive.
