“Helping one person may not change the whole world, but it could change the world for one person.”
On 4th July 2017, the K2 children from PCF Sparkletots @ Limbang Blk 786 started their Start Small Dream Big Project Launch by understanding more about the importance of helping the less fortunate.
During the launch, children discussed the topic: Why do we need to help the less fortunate? They also shared their opinions on ways they can help others. A KWL chart was used during the open-discussion. Other than that, videos on caring for those who are in need were also shown to the children for them to get a better idea on the purpose and benefits of donating.
(KWL Chart done up together with children during the open-discussion on SSDB Project Launch Day!)
The children got their families involved in the SSDB Project by promoting the importance of giving to those in need. The school and children organized a Food Donation Drive from 10th July 2017 - 14th July 2017, in collaboration with The Food Bank SG.
Children and families worked hand in hand to come up with a Food Donation Drive poster to hype up other families to participate in this heart-warming event.
(Children showing the posters they had done up together with their families; creativity at its peak!)
Food donations received were delivered to The Food Bank SG where they will then disseminate the food donations to the less fortunate in Singapore.
(Each child was given the chance to pack the food neatly into the carton boxes. A total of 10 carton boxes filled with food were donated!)
In conjunction with SG Cares Project, children were given the opportunity to fold a red heart origami as a gesture to demonstrate that they support the idea of helping and caring for those who are in need.
This event will benefit the lower income families or people who are in need of daily staples/necessities. The Food Donation Drive event gives the children a chance to understand the importance of helping others and appreciate things that they have; a sense of accomplishment can be felt for doing a good deed throughout the week. It is also an eye-opening experience for them and it helps them understand how lucky they are everyday. They also learn to appreciate the food on their tables even more.
All in all, the K2s from PCF Sparkletots @ Limbang Blk 786 are humbled to be participating in such a noble event. They enjoyed themselves and have learnt alot about caring for others, beyond just family and peers! This experience and feeling is something they can take-away and will remember fondly.
