In conjunction with our SSDB project, Kindness Starts with Me!, we aim to ensure the children understood the importance of being kind.
On 11th June, using the story, Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes, the K1 and K2 children were told the heart warming story of Chrysanthemum, a child who was being bullied and teased in school due to her name.
The children were given a big paper heart which represented Chrysanthemum’s heart. Each time someone was unkind to Chrysanthemum in the story, the children had to crumple their paper heart. And each time someone made her feel better they had to smoothen their paper heart.
After the story, the children realised that even though we tried very hard to smoothen the paper heart, the crumpled parts are still visible. This means that whenever we hurt or act unkind to others, their hurt and crumpled heart can never be truly “fixed”. They even tried to fix the heart using bandaids and kind words. But the heart remained crumpled.
It made the children realise the importance of being kind and that their actions and words might cause a permanent impact on others . 😊
