Good Shepherd Convent Kindergarten’s K1 children went to NKF Bedok Dialysis Centre on the 2 April 2019. It was an orientation around the Centre. We had six K1 parents from each session that followed us to NKF.
The children and parents were introduced to the person -in- charge, Sr Lily Tan. Sr Lily is the nurse manager as she is charge of the patient’s medical condition and operation of the dialysis centre. They were also introduced to Ms Priscilla Ng, Ms Lim Sze Ying and Ms Sharon Yip who are the social workers at the dialysis centre.
Ms Priscilla briefed the children on the five fingers rules of the centre. Thumb represented to be at the good behaviour, index represented use volume 1, middle finger represented smile and say hello, ring finger represented do not run around and pinky represented keep the hands by your side. Next, they had a tour around the centre and after which, they also had a talk about the nurses’ job scope- using stethoscope and computer on wheel (COW).
They had the hands-on experience of using the stethoscope. They could listen to their friends’ heart beats.
Before the children departed from the centre, they had a Yakult drink. The patients were given the same Yakult drink too. The children had an inkling of how a dialysis centre looked like and they knew how they should behave in the centre according to the five fingers rules.
