For our service learning programme this year, we wanted to do something new. To involve our pupils in the brainstorming process, they were showed pictures of needy people in Singapore. Teachers led pupils to do reflections, followed by discussions on their thoughts and feelings. They were asked if they would want to help out and most said yes!
So we all put on our thinking caps and thought of various ideas. As we had invited elderly to celebrate festivals and events with us in the past, we thought it would be nice to try something different. Finally, it was decided that fundraising would be a better idea!
After finalising our project, we had to think of what to sell and who to sell them to. As pupils enjoyed hands-on activities, we decided to get pupils to do some craftworks that incorporate recycled materials for sale. This will raise their awareness about environmental protection as well as understand how they can recycle, reduce and reuse. Thus we started collecting magazines, paper bags, stones etc for our creative craftworks.
To encourage parental involvement, they were also invited to participate in this project by making recycled items at home with their children which were then be put up for sale.
The next item on our list is our potential ‘customers’. We will set up a sale booth during our parents-teachers meeting but this target group is probably not enough. Since our pupils will be visiting Montfort Junior School, we will tie up with them to hold our SSDB sales during recess time and our pupils can be put in charge of the sales too!
To get everyone excited and ready for the project, we planned something fun and lively for our launch party. We wrote a short cheer related to our ‘Creative Hands * Loving Hearts’ project and got our pupils to chant them with actions.
‘Creative Hands and Loving Hearts. Let’s all come and do our parts. We will bring warmth and love to their hearts’.
The launch party ended with boisterous cheers and a toast to success. Do Look out for our next exciting story.
