The project ‘Community of Joy’ is about creating opportunities for children to make meaningful contact with the elderly in the nursing home, MWS-Yew Tee. We had a collaboration with the Youth Executive Committee (Yew Tee) embarking in this project.
The children learnt to be careful, patience, and spoke in the languages that they elderly could understand. Each pair of the child and elderly were engrossed in making a beautiful product using the play dough on the picture. They overcame the language barrier and used the verbal and non-verbal communication to complete a task.
Learning from and applying with the different skills from each other on the way to handle the play dough were observed. For example, rolling the dough using palm, using finger tips to roll into a smaller piece of dough, pressing the dough using with tip, and etc. This activity reflected their learning areas such as fine motor skills, language, SED and A&C. The knowledge and dispositions such as perseverance and engagement were also evident in this task.
In the midst of doing this activity, a mixture of old songs and children’s songs were being played in the background music. The elderly sang their old songs, followed by children singing their familiar songs. The atmosphere was heart warming. No words can describe exactly how all the participants felt in there.
The children put up a singing and dancing performance for the elderly.
Till next visit, we will be back again. Wait for us!!
