It was observed that there was a lack of awareness of ‘Going Green’ amongst the children in our centre, we decided to ignite the spirit in our children in experiencing hands-on and sensorial gardening experience with both their teachers and peers for our SSDB project!
Through this simple project, both the teachers and children brainstormed ideas and shared their thoughts on ways to make this project meaningful and fun. We worked collaboratively with NPark for seeds and plants advice on how to grow certain plants. Our teachers attended basic gardening workshop led by NPark Gardening Specialist before sharing the knowledge with our children and get them to experience real hands-on gardening in the classroom! Our children also took good care of their plants and ensured that their plants received sufficient amount of water, sunlight, air, nutrients, time and love!
We were also fortunate to tap on our community garden located behind the centre to let our children learn positive character-building values such as responsibility, appreciation and respect for their environment. The children were always observed to be excited and looking forward to water the plants in the community garden during their outdoor play activity too.
Besides beautifying our school, we hope that this year SSDB project has helped in boosting the physical and mental health of our children, foster positive bonding amongst our children, parents and staff, stimulate the children’s responsibility in caring and taking care of the community garden, respecting each other’s opinion during team work in gardening as well as inspire innovation in getting our children to grow plants using recycled materials.
