We disscussed and shared with the children the importance of the value ‘Kindness’. This year, our school has decided on caring for the elderly at the Nursing Home. For introduction, teachers showed the children pictures of nursing homes and the people who cares for the elder at the nursing home. The teachers also shared the activities that are done at the nursing homes to keep the elderly engaged and entertained.
On the 18th of April 2022, children were shown pictures and news articles on volunteers who lents a helping hand to the nursing homes. There were articles that displayed how children put a smile on the elderly by performing for them and articles on donations drives where the public donated food or appropriate items that the elder homes can use.
The children were then shown the various food items to donate to the nursing homes. They were told that not all food items are given to them to look out for to donate. The donated items will be collected during a ‘barter trade’ and the crafts done by the children will be given to famililes in exchange.
Across the months, children worked on their crafts and all crafts were collated and prepared for the trade.
During the last week of the month of August, a station was prepared by the teachers. Many families were participative of the barter trade and the results were beyong our expectations!
After the barter trade, teachers have arranged a date where they would bring down the food items to the nursing home, together with representatives from the school to hand over the donations to the nursing home.
A conclusion session was held where the children shared their experience participating in the barter trade. The children felt proud of themselves and are looking forward to next year’s SSWB project!
