Introduction for the Project
A discussion was carried out with the K2 children to decide on the topic for the project. We decided that the elderly’s health and safety is crucial in this pandemic situation.
K2 children were very excited to share ways that we can use to care for the elderly. Some of them have grandparents at home which makes it easy for them to relate their feelings to.
Deon asked “How many elderly can we help?”
Matanya said “I go to my grandmother house every Saturday to help her cook.”
We have decided that we can work with community partner, Bright Hill Evergreen Nursing Home, to see how else we can assist them to care for the elderly. We also can ask parents to donate items which the elderly often use or eat. The children came up with an idea to do a self portrait of themselves to their parents in return for the donation drive.
Overall, children will be embarking this journey to express their love and concern to the elderly. They will learn how to give back to the society and broaden their minds with this experience.
Our Beginning
To start off, we had prior discussion already and the K2 children are working on their self portraits.
The K2 children used a wide range of materials such as colour pencils, crayons and markers to complete the art piece.
Sketching in progress…
When they all compete their self portraits, I laminated them and the children gave it to their mummy or daddy when it’s time to go home.
As all of this is happening, my centre principal emailed to Bright Hill Evergreen Nursing Home to ask for a collaboration.
Bright Hill Evergreen Nursing Home replied that they will work with us and they listed down the items which they want for the nursing home.
A letter was sent out to the parents and it is placed on the notice board outside for parents to read as well.
The Next Day
Our first donation came in the very next day!
Then more donations came along!
Ken Rui said that he wants to carry the items too.
The donation drive went on for a duration of one week.
On 29th June 2021, people from Bright Hill Evergreen Nursing Home drove here and collected the items from us.
The K2 children were very eager to help the staff from the nursing home.
The K2 children showed and told the staff what the items in the boxes were.
We all said a big thank you to the staff who helped to bring the donated items to Bright Hill Evergreen Nursing Home.
They thanked us in return too.
