Having launched on 26 May 2023, our children have been actively engaged with everyday life experiences caring for the environment. It has become a practice for them to bring from home things that they wish to deposit into the Bloobox or contribute to the class ‘Collectibles’ for usage. They would get to discuss and decide which of them can be reused or recycled before they make a trip to deposit them into the Bloobin.
Parents in our PSG also advocate on 3Rs and participate actively in our school events/activities and help to brainstorm upcyclying activities to engage children’s participation in using recycled materials to create crafts.
We would also wish our young children to have an opportunity to learn how to show care and compassion towards people around them. We collaborated with Jurong West Nursing Home and appreciated them allowing our children an opportunity to interact with their residents. Children were excited and looked forward to the visit on 5 Sep 2023! Food items were collected and sorted into ‘Singapore Kindness Movement’ bags decorated by children for distribution to appreciate both the staff and residents at the nursing home.
Likewise, the residents were joyful to see our young children. At first, some of the children were shy but they were able to interact with them respectfully when encouraged. Next, our children put up a ‘Pountfit’ performance and sang along to the tune ‘Singapura’. The residents were also invited to join in and each was presented a set of poundfit sticks for tapping along with us. It was great to see them working out with our children!
Thereafter, the residents and children split into smaller groups to work together on upcycling craft activities planned by our PSG. It was heartening to see all - residents, parents, children and teachers working together and interacting much more!
Finally, the residents showcased what they have made…. flowers (bottle caps), ladybugs (spoons), tortoise and people (egg cartons)…
In conclusion, all of us have a wonderful and enriching experience interacting with the residents. Through this visit, we hope that we can help to nurture our young children to be more appreciative and respectful to all loved ones around them!
