The children did the disappearing bacteria activity. It was a simple and easy but amazing experiment. You can make the picture disappear by just putting the zip lock bag into the water. This happens because of refraction. It looked like magic and the kids couldn’t resist magic. They were all fascinated! From this activity, they learnt about the importance of washing hands.
Besides teaching the children about germs, it is also important to inculcate proper hand washing techniques in young children. “Wash your hands!” It’s a well-worn phrase that parents and teachers often say on repeat. But one big question remains: Are kids washing their hands correctly? Thus, we recapped on the hand washing steps. It was taught before, but it is still good to emphasise once in a while so that the children can remember it clearer. It is also important to start cultivating this habit from young to ensure that children will carry it through with them to adulthood.
As children start returning to school, we were challenged to find new ways to promote their learning. We noticed some of the activities we used to won’t work anymore because they involve physical contact. Therefore, we tried many different ways to learn to have fun while adapting to a new normal by using visual cues, storybooks and games.
It is never too early to take charge of one’s own health! We hope that it will create a ripple effect in the family, and encourage other family members to adopt good personal hygiene practices to protect themselves against infectious diseases. Together, a stronger Singapore!
Stay safe, stay strong, stay united!
