Aquaponic

On 13 October 2022, our SkoolReady children particicpated in an insightful programme: Aquaponics & The Amazing Wonders of Nature by BlossomMinds to in line with the Start Small Dream Big (SSDB) project, Little Green Fingers.

The programme started off with an introduction to aquaponic. Through an interactive session with our animated presenter, using a series of slides and video clips to give the children a better understanding on the importance of sustainable farming. After the presentation, the children were inspired to be a little superhero that advocate their love and care towards the environment.

The children then procceded to the next segment of the programme. Before setting up their own aquaponic set-up, they were have to catch their own fish. They were very excited to be able to catch their favourite betta fish.

In addition, the children had an opportunity to observe a simple aquaponic system, through this experience the children were able to observe and understand the relationship between the live animals and plants. Some children were very keen to pick up the terrapins to have a closer look. While others would observed the characteristics of the terrapin. During their observation, they were able to decribe the textures the shells and fascinated by the movement of the terrapins.

After they had caught their favourite betta fish, it is time for the children to create their own mini-Aquaculture ecosystem guided by the professional ecologist.

After introducing the materials to the children, they were guided step by step to assemble their aquaponic jar. As they were assembling, they observed how the water changes and the reactions of the fish. The children also started giving the pet fish a name.

To summarised their learning, they had an activity sheet to complete.

The SkoolReady children had displayed a sense of wonder and curiosity through the interactive activities by exploring live exhibits and asking question during the session. They also demonstrated a great sense of engagement as they participated in the meaningful activities such as catching fish, making their mini aquaponic jar and etc.

Our children had lots of fun during the activity and we look forward in organizing more meaningful and insightful activities for our children. We would to take this opportunity to thank all parents for your continued support in making this programme a success.
