In early 2024, we embarked on a thoughtfully planned outreach project. After discussions with the children, it became clear that they wanted to share their love with the seniors. We scheduled a series of six bi-monthly visitations, each with a unique theme and relevant activities. From our first visit celebrating Chinese New Year (CNY) to our upcoming one in October, each event has generated excitement among both the children and the seniors in the home.
During our inaugural visit, just a week before CNY, the children engaged in a spring couplet craft with the seniors. The interaction was heartwarming as both groups collaborated creatively, and they proudly displayed their finished pieces.
For the second visitation, coinciding with the Hari Raya celebrations, we introduced a weaving activity inspired by ‘ketupat,’ a traditional Javanese rice cake wrapped in a diamond-shaped container of woven palm leaves. This craft proved challenging for some children, but the patient guidance of the loving seniors made it a rewarding experience. 2 / 2
On June 6th, for our third visit, we invited parental collaboration. Each family contributed by creating a tic-tac-toe game to bring to the home. The enthusiasm from parents matched the joy seen as the seniors and children played together.
During our fourth visit, we organized a lively game of Bingo. It was endearing to watch the children assist in listening for and identifying the numbers called. The seniors took the opportunity to teach the children numerals they hadn’t yet learned in school, creating another heartwarming moment.
Our next visitation to All Saints Home is scheduled for October, and preparations are already underway. As with previous visits, we are carefully planning engaging programs and interactive activities. Our focus remains on fostering quality interactions that build inclusion, understanding, and friendship with the cherished senior generation in our community.
