To instil the value of respect, love and care for their grandparents, the K1 and K2 children together with their teachers at Bright Juniors at Bishan launched the SSDB Program about Loving and Caring for Grandparents. We chose to do the said theme to teach children to create family connections and foster family traditions. We would also like to encourage a harmonious relationship by creating a bond between the children and their grandparents. Lastly, to encourage the grandparents to give additional perspective towards their grandchildren’s opinions or views because they can’t just be primary caregivers but also a strong support mentally and emotionally. The launching party was a success as we did it via Zoom for the parents and the grandparents to participate through virtual interaction. The children did a special number song titled “Skidamarink” to which the families also sang along with actions. The children had a three-part skit to which they expressed how they would care for their grandparents. Lucas Choo from K2 said, “I will help my Nainai clean up because she always cook for us” while Hwee En from K1 exclaimed, “I will give my grandma massage!” We had an interactive game as well with the families by guessing whose grandparent is in the photo and the children would proudly put their hand up and say “My grandma/grandpa!” On the latter part of our program, the children read their pledges and stick it on the board for everyone to see! From Raphaela of K2, “I pledge to love my grandparents forever”. From Yi Heng of K1, “I promise to hug my grandpa”. Another activity was the Show and Tell of the children’s portraits of their grandparents. When Ek Sin from K2 was asked about his drawing, he answered, “There are police cars around grandma to protect her.” Before we ended the program, the families were informed that throughout the year, we will be having projects for the children to do such as board games and other fun activities for the latter to take home and enjoy with their grandparents. The suggested activities are for both parties to enjoy at home to strengthen the bond between the children and their grandparents. The teachers will be collecting data such as pictures and videos from the families for the project.
The launching party finished nicely with the children exclaiming “I Love You” to their grandparents! At the end of the day, the children took some Anzac cookies they helped the teachers baked from the day before for their grandparents to enjoy during tea-time!
