Total Defence Day is commemorated every 15th of February which marks the day of Singapore’s fall to the Japanese in 1942. It serves as a reminder to keep our guards up so this part of history will not repeat itself. Total Defence, in essence, means that everyone has a part to play in the collective defence of Singapore against all forms of attack, be it military or non-military. It is comprised of six pillars which are Military, Civil, Economic, Social, Digital, and Psychological Defence.
Children from Kindergarten 1 and 2 learning about Total Defence
As most of these concepts might seem too complex and abstract for children to understand, we could start educating them about the pillar that is more relatable to them: Social Defence. This pillar highlights the importance of living and working together in harmony— a value that they also learn and apply in the classroom. Apart from this, we could foster children’s appreciation for the other sectors that contribute to the national defence.
