During our SSDB launch, Teacher explained the importance of this SSDB project and how children could contribute and participate. “Be friend to an Elderly” is the theme for our project; we showed the video “On befriendingan elderly (Season 2 Episode 10); and talked about ways we can make friends with the elderly at the Senior Care Corner.
In collaboration with the Senior Care Corner, our K2 children visited the Senior Care Corner to be friends with the elderly on 4 May 2018. The elderly were delighted to see the children and we recieved warm welcome upon arrival. The K2 children were also excited to see the elderly; and performed songs and dances for them. The elderly watched and participated by clapping while the children were performing.
We played a simple activity “ Getting to know each other” by pairing the children with an elderly and asked each other some questions (e.g What is your name? What is your favourite food?. What is your hobby?). The children also played some fun games after getting to know the elderly a little better.
Our parents and guardians supported us in this project with thier generous donation of fruits for the elderly. Through this, children learnt and developed values such as respect, responsibility, empathy and compassion for others, especially the elderly.
On 21 May 2018, our children welcomed eighteen elderly from the Senior Care Corner to our Centre with the song “Looking for a friend”. They also presented a paper crown craft for each elderly. Our K2 children, acted as ambassadors and brought the elderly to tour the classrooms and shared with them purposes of the rooms. After which, the children engaged the elderly with craft work (photo frame), then there was a gift exchange at the end of the visit. Through this, our children developed to be more socially responsible citizens by putting into practice the values, knowledge and skills they learnt in class.
