For this year’s SSDB, our K2 children have learnt how to care for the community and the environment. So…how was it possible to care for both at the same time? As we all know, food wastage holds up to about 10 per cent of the total waste generated in Singapore, but about only 18 per cent of the food waste is recycled! In order to reduce food waste, the K2 children did two activities during the Circuit Breaker in helping to reduce food waste!
The first activity was done to reduce food waste. The children had to keep the food item that were needed by their families and collect the ones that they think are not needed. Where will those food items that they collected go to?
We got the children to bring it back to school and have them to collate and place the food items into a box before we donated them to The Food Bank Singapore to be redistributed to those who needed them in the community. Try to spot the food items box that we have donated out!
The second activity provided opportunity for children to plan out their meals and food portions with their parents. This helps to prevent food wastage. Children were encouraged to keep a food diary for them they to jot down their plans and to record any food wastage.
